Innovations and Excellence project – Kew Cluster
Proposed Action Research Plan – Interactive Whiteboards
Identify the Issue
Imyms Component Mapping indicates that cluster schools are all down significantly on integrating ICT into the teaching / learning process.
Cluster schools have identified that boys’ writing outcomes are down relative to that of the girls.
Identify a focus
Using ICT to assist with the development of a range of fundamental skills in writing and literacy, and to foster student engagement in the learning process. Boys and literacy will be an identified priority within this focus.
The inquiry
Will the use of interactive whiteboards as learning scaffold, contribute to increased student engagement in class activities, and the improvement of student learning?
The Plan
- Cluster PALT contacts Audio Visual Unlimited who will arrange a three months trial of this product to involved cluster schools. Individual schools will have an option on buying the unit at the end of this period.
- Installation will be carried out by AV Unlimited at half the cost to the cluster, and will provide training to school representatives.
- Middle year’s teachers build the use of the whiteboards into their class program, linking regularly with cluster collegues as to the strategies and applications trialled.
- Each school follows PALT guidelines for reporting on outcomes of the initiative.
Expected Outcomes
Students:
- Improved student outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
- Greater enthusiasm and involvement within the learning process
- Greater student engagement in the writing process, and especially so the boys.
- Enhanced creativity in student work across the key learning areas.
Teachers:
- Exposure to new range of teaching strategies, and professional dialogue as to the application and effectiveness of these utilizing this equipment.
Evidence of Outcomes:
Data source 1: assessment of student’s standard of work, and particularly written work
Data source 2: teacher and student judgements on student’s engagement with the writing process utilizing the whiteboards.
Data source 3: 10/4 protocol involving teachers in the equipment trial to identify the most effective uses of the whiteboards.
