KEPS Integrated Maths Unit – M & M (Maths & Me)
Introduction
This unit was developed by Level Four teachers who wanted to look at mathematical ideas in new and more purposeful ways with students in their classes. They wanted to help students make connections between mathematics and daily life and help students see themselves and others as mathematicians. They also wanted to give the students a chance to negotiate their own learning in an area of maths that particularly interested each own individual student.
The main key focuses of the unit were:
To celebrate the end of their journey “Reflection and Action”, the students had to create a graffiti board on A2 cardboard and share their journey with a Level Three buddy.
- To give students a deeper understanding of how mathematics integrates into all areas of life
- To increase student ‘s knowledge of different mathematical concepts in the world around them
- For students to make connections between theoretical and practical maths ideas
- For students to understand that there are a variety of mathematical concepts that work in conjunction with each other
- For students to challenge different stereotypical concepts about mathematics in general
- For students to see themselves as mathematicians
- For students to challenge, question and reflect on what is mathematics and how it is used in everyday life
To celebrate the end of their journey “Reflection and Action”, the students had to create a graffiti board on A2 cardboard and share their journey with a Level Three buddy.
