Our Place in Space
At level four the aim was to make greater connections between science and mathematics in the integrated unit, OUR PLACE IN SPACE. The children would apply mathematics to Space related activities, whilst still developing a greater understanding of scientific skills and knowledge. During the tuning in, the children demonstrated a keenness to find out more information about Space as they had little understanding or knowledge.
The main key focuses of the unit were:
- To give students an opportunity to make connections between science and mathematics.
- To use mathematics to assist students to develop a greater understanding of Space.
- For the students to make connections between mathematical knowledge and its application in practical situations.
- To develop a hands-on science and maths component in Our Place In Space
The unit developed a number of different components. Using information or facts researched by the children, the data would be compared and applied to known ideas and concepts to develop greater understanding.
- Planet Space Travel Agency – a partner task to develop a Webpage Travel page in a planet of their own choosing.
- Belle Vue Space Authority Rocket project – a team task. This also involves looking at rockets, comparing their size to known objects and their stability.
- Fermi Maths problems
The students are involvement in developing the assessment rubric. Peer and self- assessment and a student reflection and concept mapping will complete the unit.
